Providing an enriching preschool education to our three to five year olds is the goal of all preschool educators. The lessons are not isolated events presented to them in a classroom. Instead, we use their world as the classroom and take each opportunity in their lives as a steppingstone to present a lesson.
Lessons can have a specific focus such as a certain letter or number but this is just the starting point. Take this focus and show the preschoolers how it relates to their day to day lives. Provide them an opportunity to play, experience and discover what you are teaching. When you can get them to make the discovery rather than memorizing something you have told them, THEN they are learning.
For preschool education to have true value we have to provide these moments for them to make the connections between what we are teaching and how they live. Use of longer term projects are fun and create an anticipation to see what happens next. Give the ideas below a try with your preschoolers. All of you will have fun and learn together.

A big part of this toddler lesson plan is learning about the planet and how it works, and there’s no better way to emphasize that than to watch it in action. There are many ways to demonstrate how seeds grow, and here are two simple ones.
First try planting seeds in plastic baggies. To begin, wet a paper towel and place it in a plastic baggie. Place 4-6 white beans onto the paper towel, seal the baggie tightly, and put it in the classroom window. After a few days, the beans will sprout towards the top of the baggie.
Or try showing children how to grow their name in soil. Gather a number of small boxes and line them with plastic before the class. Fill the boxes with potting soil, and give one to each child. Have them trace their name with their finger in the dirt, and sprinkle the path with grass seeds. Gently sprinkle more soil to cover the seeds. Water the seeds every few days and watch the names grow!
These longer term projects are just right to capture the imagination of your kids and keep them guessing and watching to see what happens next.
